When urgent care professionals come together, great information is shared and memories are made. This year’s Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA) Fall Conference held Oct. 3-5, 2013 in Glendale, Ariz., was no exception.
From the opening reception to the last hours of exhibiting and classes, Practice Velocity was honored to meet with so many urgent care professionals. We made new acquaintances, socialized with old friends, and shared our advice and knowledge with hundreds in Glendale, and it was truly a pleasure.
“My favorite part of the UCAOA conference was the opportunity to connect with old friends and make new ones,” said Dr. William Gluckman, President and CEO of FastER Urgent Care, Morris Plains, N.J., adding he also enjoyed sharing “in the growth and promotion of urgent care as an integral part of the healthcare delivery system.”
The Fall Conference featured industry experts discussing current topics in urgent care. Representatives from Practice Velocity and its sister company NMN Consultants presented in classes Friday, speaking on topics of urgent care startups, as well as successful reimbursement strategies. Other topics covered at the conference included marketing, urgent care coding, healthcare reform, as well as clinical sessions such as a hands-on splinting and casting workshop.

“I was on the marketing track and, honestly, just about every lecture was excellent,” said Dr. Robert van Amerongen, Medical Director of Urgent-MD, Hewlett, N.Y. “I really can’t believe these successful urgent cares are so willing to share their hard-earned knowledge to help me.”With the topic of healthcare reform on everyone’s minds, UCAOA welcomed John Harris of DGA Partners as the keynote speaker to present on “Post-Health Reform Competitive Landscape: Where will urgent care fit in?” The topic was also featured as a one-day course, detailing how to reposition urgent care centers for the impending reform, as well as observations of the new insurance marketplace and how it impacts urgent cares.

“The most interesting part of the forum was learning how one has to keep their ear to the ground and be approachable, cautious and ready for the unknown,” said Ellen Varosi, Urgent Care at Lake Lucille, Wasilla, Alaska.

During exhibiting hours, the booths of Practice Velocity, PV Billing, and NMN Consultants all welcomed numerous visitors throughout the three days. David Stern, MD, CEO of Practice Velocity, personally performed numerous live demos of the company’s electronic medical record (EMR), VelociDoc®. The EMR has been rated the #1 urgent care EMR by Black Book Rankings three years in a row.

In addition, representatives from PV Billing discussed the advantages to using PV Billing as the industry’s largest urgent care billing company. A top draw to the booth was free 30-minute consultations available on contracting and credentialing, a critical step to any urgent care startup.

While we love talking the business side of urgent care, we also enjoy kicking back and socializing with friends and customers as a way to say thank you. Some highlights included dinners with clients and friends of PV, as well as hitting the nearby stadium for the Phoenix Coyotes season opener hockey game.
