David Stern, MD and CEO of Practice Velocity, will present “10 Strategies for Improving Center Financial Performance” from 10:15-11:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. He will also present a session called “Isolating and Solving Center Financial Issues” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.
The two sessions will offer tips for urgent care operators for diagnosing and addressing issues with profitability. There are ways, Dr. Stern will explain, to identify patterns in the center’s financials that could indicate emerging or unaddressed problems with revenue cycle, coding, staffing, or patient flow. He will show actual financial data from a struggling urgent care center to illustrate the ways to evaluate trends and act on various financial levers to improve performance. Attendees will come away with actionable ideas to improve operations at their centers.
“An urgent care center may start with the most detailed of business plans, but the realities of actually operating the walk-in medical business can introduce challenges,” Stern said. “These obstacles can keep the center from meeting financial objectives, but there are steps you can take to get back on track.”
Alan Ayers, MBA and Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Practice Velocity, presents “Clinic Startup Fundamentals: Site Selection” from 8:15-9:15 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29. He will explain to participants the factors that drive urgent care volume and the factors that could limit volume.
Ayers will identify the pros and cons of various types of space, such as medical office buildings, freestanding/street-facing, shopping center end-cap, and in-line retail. He will also discuss some of the common site selection pitfalls, including poor visibility, insufficient density, and overspending during the build-out.
“The retail aspects of the urgent care business cannot be overlooked if an operator wants to succeed,” Ayers said. “We’ll discuss the importance of signage and traffic counts as marketing tools to drive awareness of your new urgent care center in the community, and we’ll look at demographic and property characteristics that make for a ‘good location.’”
