Human Resources in the Urgent Care Center

Several urgent care leaders have shared their methods for hiring and retaining quality physicians, physician assistants, nurses, x-ray technicians, and receptionists.   • INVEST: Great staffers realize that they are making serious contributions to the success of the urgent care center, and they will expect to receive a good salary for good work. The most important investment any urgent care center will make is in the right people. Someone once said, "People are not the most important resource in any business. Rather, the right people are the most important resource in any business."
  • SCREEN: The morale and efficiency of your center can be seriously impaired with the fallout from a single bad hire. Try to avoid simply filling slots. Take the time to find the right staff. Ask tough questions. Call previous employers. Remember your staff is like your family, and family problems can be quite difficult. Hiring a new staffer is like adopting a new family member. Make sure that you know what you are getting.
  • CELEBRATE: Look for milestones in the history of your urgent care center. Celebrate your first hundred-patient week with a pizza party. Celebrate your first thousand-patient month with a picnic. When the largest company in town starts using your for drug screens, buy lunch for the staff. Do try to avoid serving the drinks in urine collection cups.
  • RECOGNIZE: One successful urgent care administrator mentioned that she tries to find two people doing something right every day and then publicly recognizes the contribution. It may be as small as getting a glass of water for an ill patient or as big as catching that the physician has mistakenly prescribed a medication to which the patient is allergic. Most people don't just work for a paycheck. In our increasingly uncaring world, most people want to be significant and want others to recognize their significance.
  • WIN: Winning teams are happy teams. Players on losing teams are always blaming teammates for their problems, and they are always looking to move to a winning team. Let your team know that your urgent care team is a winner:
    • every time a patient gets excellent care
    • every time a mother can sleep at night because her son was able to get treatment for an ear infection at 7PM
    • every time a new company finds your quality and convenience for the treatment of workers compensation injuries. Share the news with your team. Let them know that they are on a winning team. Teams that believe they are winners are very hard to beat. Have fun! Winning teams have fun and stick together
