Questions for Dr. Stern

About Your Urgent Care Center

43. I am a RN currently working in my town's local ED. I am working towards my Masters. My ultimate goal is to be a nurse practitioner in adult health or acute care. I haven't made that decision yet. I've been researching urgent care facilities and in my research I've found that these practices are generally run and/or started by a physician. In your work, have you heard of or seen a facility started up by an NP? This is something I am really interested in...Please give me your thoughts on this. It would be so appreciated!!

Urgent care is an exciting and rapidly growing field. In most situations, mid-level providers choose to open an urgent care in conjunction with a physician, but this would be up to you, although some states may require a level of physician ownership. It is quite expensive (~$500,000) to open an urgent care center, so partners usually make sense to increase borrowing power.
If you are really serious about this, I would suggest that you attend the fall conference or the spring pre-conference on “How to Start an Urgent Care Center.” Read more at:
